Cryptocurrency is stored in digital wallets. There are two kinds of wallets: hot wallets and cold wallets. A hot wallet is one that is connected to the internet, whereas a cold wallet is one that is not. Understanding the key differences between a hot wallet and a cold wallet can help you decide how to keep your crypto assets safe while also ensuring their accessibility.

How Do Cryptocurrency Wallets Work?

A cryptocurrency wallet is where a crypto user's public and private keys are stored. These keys are required for transactions to be completed.

The public key  is a cryptographic key that allows someone to send digital coins to an address without identifying the user. It's similar to an account username.

Private Key — This is your personal information that you use to identify yourself as the wallet's owner. It's similar to a PIN or a password. You can access your hot wallet using your private key to see what's going on.

While these keys can be kept on a piece of paper, they must be kept secure. If you misplace your key, you may lose access to all of your account's funds. That is why it is critical to keep these numbers secure, and why many cryptocurrency investors use a hot or cold wallet.

Cold Wallet vs. Hot Wallet

Wallets are often digital in nature and keep track of digital assets (although some cold wallets might not be completely digital). Users can store, send, and receive tokens using both hot and cold wallets.

The primary distinction between a hot wallet and a cold wallet is that a hot wallet is linked to the internet, whereas a cold wallet is not. A hot wallet, such as a Binance wallet, is often more accessible and can be linked to the platform on which you trade. This makes it easier to use in internet transactions. Many hot wallets are even completely free. A hot wallet, on the other hand, may be more vulnerable to hackers.

A cold wallet, on the other hand, provides storage that isn't always online. Paper wallets or an offline computer are also considered a cold wallet although these days most traders opt for specific hardware designed to store crypto, like a Trezor wallet or even a USB. They are considered more secure, since they can be accessed only in specific ways. A hardware wallet is intended to be impenetrable to thieves. The funds cannot be stolen even when plugged into a computer and connected to the internet because the transaction must be authorized or signed by the device itself. They are less accessible than a hot wallet because you must obtain the key for each transaction.Cold wallets are also more expensive, with hardware wallets ranging in price from $50 to $200.

How Does a Hot Wallet Work?

Hot wallets, for the most part, are intended to make it easier to store and access your crypto assets. If you buy or mine digital currencies, you can have the coins delivered to your online storage account quickly. Furthermore, if you want to buy something and pay with cryptocurrency, using your hot wallet is simple.  A hot wallet stores both the private and public keys on the internet or on a device that is connected to the internet (such as your computer or smartphone). This means that hackers can access the keys. If you are not vigilant in protecting your information, it may be stolen.

Summary

When it comes to cryptocurrency investing, there is a lot to consider. Before you can decide which type of wallet is best for you, you must first decide how you want to invest.

You can then tackle the hot wallet vs. cold wallet debate. In many cases, having a hot wallet connected to the internet and keeping a limited number of coins inside for ease of use makes sense. However, for added security, keep the majority of your assets in a cold wallet where they are less accessible to potential hackers.
